Arsenal are ready to rival Manchester United in the battle to sign Bayern Munich center-back Jerome Boateng, according to reports in Germany.
United are reported to have made official contact over a transfer on Sunday with the Bundesliga champions. Bayern Munich are willing to cash in on Boateng this summer, with the club well stocked in central defense.
Jose Mourinho is keen to reinforce his defense and talks between the two clubs took place following United’s pre-season friendly defeat at the Allianz Arena.
However, reports have it that Arsenal – as well as PSG – also ready to make move for the German International.
Arsenal is in the market for a new center-back, with Laurent Koscielny injured until the new year, Per Mertesacker having retired and Calum Chambers set to join Fulham.
If a bidding war ensues, Bayern are confident of getting around £44million for Boateng given that he still has a contract until 2021.
Boateng is believed to be open to moving to either Manchester or London, having previously lived in the former while playing for United’s rivals City.
Boateng’s form dipped somewhat last season, but he is still considered one of the best central defenders in Europe and Arsenal head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is fully aware of his talents.
